Alfred Pennyworth is an English butler residing in Gotham City. He is a former war veteran and combat medic, as well as an accomplished stage actor. He currently works as a manservant for a wealthy Gotham family. The only surviving member of the Gotham family which he serves is Patrick Bateman.

Theories

There is a body of evidence which purports that Alfred is actually Bane, either in disguise or through some body-snatching technique. Another interpretation of the evidence has Bane as an alter ego of Alfred.
